Kyiv calls for UN intervention after Oreshnik missile strike

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday at the request of Ukraine, which accuses Russia of escalating attacks on civilian targets. The move follows Russia's second use of the Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile since the start of the war.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN Andriy Melnyk called the attacks "a new level of war crimes" and "an unprecedented threat to European security." In Kyiv, the attacks left half of residential buildings without heating during freezing temperatures, killing four people.

The request for a meeting was supported by six member states, including France, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. According to Melnyk, this is systematic terror against civilians and a violation of international humanitarian law.

The meeting should consider further UN action in response to the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
