Representatives from Denmark and Greenland to meet with Vance and Rubio
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt will meet with US Vice President JD Vance and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio in Washington on Wednesday.
The meeting is to take place at the White House, as Vance will join and host the talks. Copenhagen requested the meeting after President Donald Trump again increased pressure and threats that the US could take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Rasmussen says the goal is to move the heated public debate "to the negotiating table" so that the parties can clarify matters directly. Trump spoke about the possibility of taking over Greenland as early as 2019, but he has met with resistance even in the US.
Denmark also wants to raise the issue of Arctic security in NATO. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen is scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels next week. Copenhagen has announced plans to strengthen its military presence in Greenland and conduct joint exercises with partners in 2026.
