The largest Roman villa in Welsh history has been discovered beneath Margam Park
Archaeologists have made a unique discovery beneath Margam Deer Park in southern Wales—a large Roman villa that experts say is the largest of its kind ever found in Wales, according to The New York Times.
It lies about a meter underground and is exceptionally well preserved, as the park has never been disturbed by agriculture or construction.
Geophysical surveys have revealed the outlines of a structure measuring approximately 43×55 meters and indicated the existence of other buildings in the vicinity, including possible Roman baths and farm buildings.
According to scientists, it could have been a fortified settlement from a period of instability in the later phase of Roman Britain. Archaeologists hope that the discovery will confirm the more important role of Wales within this province, which until now has been considered a rather peripheral area.
The project is a collaboration between Swansea University, the local council, and the church. The exact location of the find remains secret due to concerns about illegal metal detectorists.
It is not yet known when excavations will begin, but the aim is to extend the research to other parts of the site.
