Disagreements between allies benefit China and Russia, says Kallasová
Donald Trump has promised to impose increasing tariffs on European allies unless the United States is given the opportunity to purchase Greenland.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa said in posts on X that tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and could lead to a serious escalation of tensions. They stressed that Europe would remain united, coordinated, and determined to protect its sovereignty.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned that tariffs would damage prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic and distract the Union from its "main task," which is to end Russia's war against Ukraine. According to her, China and Russia would benefit most from the division of allies.
Kallas added that if Greenland's security is threatened, the solution can be found within NATO, not through trade sanctions.
The ambassadors of the 27 EU member states will meet on Sunday for an extraordinary meeting to discuss a joint response to the threat of US tariffs.
