Bessent eased tensions with the EU: We can resolve the Greenland issue peacefully
At the Davos Forum, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sought to ease tensions between the US and the EU over the controversial plan to take control of Greenland. He emphasized that the situation is still fresh and that he believes in a diplomatic solution that will satisfy the security interests of both sides.
He was responding to President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on European countries that disagree with the takeover of the island. The EU sees this as a violation of the trade agreement and is preparing retaliatory tariffs worth €93 billion.
However, Bessent called for calm and stressed that he does not see a real risk of a trade war. At the same time, he downplayed the possibility of using a European "anti-coercion tool" that could significantly restrict US access to markets. He expects a working group to be set up instead.
He also dismissed concerns about the sale of US bonds by European countries, describing them as a stable part of the global financial system.
