Trump claims peace with Russia is close. He will meet with Zelensky.
US President Donald Trump announced in Davos that he will soon meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and hinted that an agreement to end the war in Ukraine is "quite close."
He claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky are ready to negotiate, even though there has been "abnormal hatred" between them in the past. Trump promises that Washington is close to a truce and that if the parties do not agree, "they are stupid."
Trump originally announced a meeting with Zelensky for Wednesday, but later changed the date to Thursday.
At the same time, he proposed the creation of a Peace Council, to which he also invited Putin. Putin has not yet officially accepted the invitation, but has declared his willingness to provide $1 billion from Russia's frozen assets.
However, Ukraine is likely to reject this plan because it considers the assets to be crucial for post-war reconstruction.
