80 political prisoners released in Venezuela, says NGO

The human rights organization Foro Penal reported the release of at least 80 political prisoners in Venezuela, where a slow process of liberation is underway following the fall of dictator Nicolás Maduro.

"At least 80 political prisoners, whom we are verifying, were released from prison today across the country. There will likely be further releases," Foro Penal director Alfredo Romero wrote on social media on Sunday.

According to lawyer Gonzalo Himiob, also from Foro Penal, the releases took place early Sunday morning. "This number is not yet final and may increase as we conduct further verifications," he said on the same social network.

After Maduro's arrest on January 3, the current head of the regime, Delcy Rodríguez, promised a "significant number" of releases.
