Orbán sends out petition against EU funding for Ukraine

According to Europskej pravdy, the Hungarian government has published the text of a petition it plans to send to voters as part of a campaign against EU financial support for Ukraine. The petition is part of an initiative by Viktor Orbán, who presented it on January 16 as a tool to mobilize his voters.

The petition shows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with his hand outstretched, alongside Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber. The text states that Ukraine will join the EU within four years and that the EU will allegedly provide it with $800 billion, which Hungarian citizens will also have to pay.

According to the petition, Brussels is prepared not only to supply weapons but also to "enter the war on the side of Ukraine."

The document warns that Hungarians will lose their 13th and 14th pensions, taxes will increase, and reduced energy tariffs will be abolished. Voters can check three options in the petition to express their disagreement: with financing the war, with paying for the running of the Ukrainian state for ten years, and with the increase in energy prices.

The petition can be sent back free of charge until March 23, 2026, just a few weeks before the parliamentary elections in Hungary on April 12.
