Switzerland wants to significantly increase its defense budget
The Swiss government plans to increase defense and security spending by CHF 31 billion (just under EUR 34 billion) from 2028. Funding will be secured by a 0.8 percentage point increase in VAT for a period of ten years, starting in 2028.
The reason for this is the deteriorating geopolitical situation – the government points to growing tensions in the world, threats to international law, and steps taken by other European countries to strengthen their defense.
The plan also includes investments in IT, cyber security, electromagnetic reconnaissance, as well as the police and border protection. Swiss politicians warn of risks such as espionage, cyberattacks, and terrorism.
The government has pointed out that current financial plans do not take into account the rising costs of armaments caused by inflation and increased demand. The proposal still has to pass through parliament and faces a possible referendum.
