Olympic truce as a chance for peace, says Pope ahead of Games
Pope Leo XIV used his Sunday address after the Angelus prayer to call on world leaders to ensure that the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina are not only a sporting celebration but also an impetus for peace.
He emphasized that the Olympic Games have a unique ability to bring people together and recalled the ancient tradition of the Olympic truce, which was intended to quell conflicts during the Games. According to the Pope, major sporting events can carry a powerful message of brotherhood and rekindle hope for a world without war.
At the same time, he appealed to political leaders and those with decision-making power to take concrete steps toward de-escalating tensions and engaging in open dialogue on this occasion.
The Olympic Games, which will be hosted by Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo from February 6 to 22, should, according to him, be a reminder that peace is not just a symbol but an active responsibility.
