Immigration agents in Minneapolis to receive body cameras

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that federal immigration agents deployed in Minneapolis will be equipped with body cameras.

The decision comes after a wave of criticism over the deaths of two American citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, which occurred last month during an immigration operation in Minnesota.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that body cameras will be deployed immediately to all agents operating in the field in Minneapolis.

According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, Pretti's death on January 24 was ruled a homicide, with multiple gunshot wounds caused by one or more law enforcement officers. He died in the hospital shortly after being transported to the emergency room.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the two agents involved in the incident were wearing body cameras and have been placed on leave. The Justice Department has launched an investigation into civil rights violations.

Noem added that once funding is secured, the government wants to expand the body camera program nationwide.

President Donald Trump supported the use of cameras, saying that in most cases they are beneficial to law enforcement agencies.
