Pope calls on US and Russia to renew nuclear treaty

On Wednesday, Pope Leo XIV called on the leaders of Russia and the United States to renew the last valid nuclear arms control treaty, New START, which limits the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads on both sides. He said this during his regular Wednesday audience at the Vatican.

According to him, the current international situation requires doing "everything possible" to prevent a new arms race. At the same time, he issued an urgent appeal to Washington and Moscow not to allow the treaty to expire.

The Pope also emphasized the need for a change in approach to international relations. "It is more urgent than ever to replace the logic of fear and mistrust with a common ethic capable of guiding decisions toward the common good," the Pope said.
