The US and Russia want new negotiations on nuclear weapons
Russia and the United States recognize the need to start negotiations on nuclear arms control soon after the New START treaty expired on Thursday. This was announced by the Kremlin on Friday. According to a spokesperson, both sides agreed at the talks in Abu Dhabi that they would act responsibly after the agreement expired.
The 2010 New START treaty limited the number of strategic missiles, launchers, and nuclear warheads in Russia and the US for more than a decade. On Friday, Washington called for a new arms control agreement.
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Thomas DiNanno said at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva that extending New START would not benefit either the US or the world because, in his view, the treaty is inadequate and does not include China.
"The US today faces threats from multiple nuclear powers," he stressed. DiNanno also pointed out that President Donald Trump wants a new nuclear treaty.
