Sao Paulo approves shared graves for humans and animals

The state of Sao Paulo in Brazil will allow dogs and cats to be buried in the graves of their owners or family members. The law, signed by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, has already come into force and stipulates that burials must comply with the hygiene and environmental rules of individual municipalities, according to Correio Braziliense.

The details will be regulated by local funeral services. Private cemeteries can set their own conditions in accordance with the legislation.

The law was inspired by a local dog named Bob Coveiro, who lived for ten years in the city cemetery after his owner was buried there. When the dog died in 2021, the authorities allowed him to be buried next to his owner.

The authors say the goal is to offer a more affordable alternative to cremation, which is often financially burdensome. According to them, the law does not impose an obligation, but gives families the opportunity to say goodbye to their pets with dignity.
