Carney after school massacre: Canada must come together
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke to reporters after a tragic mass shooting at a school in British Columbia province that killed at least ten people.
Visibly shaken, he described the attack as "horrific" and one of the worst mass murders in the country's modern history. In an emotional speech, he assured the public that Canada would overcome this tragedy and learn from it. At the same time, however, he stressed that now is the time for unity and mutual support.
He sent Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree to Tumbler Ridge to coordinate the government's response on the ground.
Carney ordered flags on all government buildings to be flown at half-mast for seven days as a symbol of national mourning. His speech came across as personal and sincere, and at one point he appeared to be holding back tears.
The tragedy has once again raised the issue of school safety and the state's response to such attacks.
