Migrants near Greece did not die from drowning, autopsies show
The deaths of 15 Afghan migrants off the Greek island of Chios were apparently not caused by drowning, but by serious head injuries. This is according to autopsy results, which, according to available documents, point to a strong impact during the collision between the boat and a coast guard vessel on February 3. The boat, carrying approximately 39 people, capsized after the collision.
The Greek coast guard claims that the boat was sailing without navigation lights, did not respond to calls, and suddenly changed course. However, five survivors question this version of events—according to their testimony, no warning was given and they did not change course.
Autopsies, which indicate severe skull and brain injuries, may therefore have a significant impact on the investigation and the question of the force of the impact.
A 31-year-old Moroccan man suspected of smuggling migrants has been detained in connection with the case.
