Reuters: Trump plans fund for Gaza and deployment of troops
US President Donald Trump is set to unveil a multi-billion dollar plan to rebuild Gaza in Washington next week, along with details on the creation of an international stabilization force.
The announcement will be made at the first meeting of his new Peace Council, which was approved by the UN Security Council in January. According to US officials, delegations from at least 20 countries, including several heads of state, will attend the meeting on February 19.
A key point will be the creation of a fund for Gaza financed by contributions from member states. Washington claims that the offers were "generous" and that the US did not set specific financial conditions.
The next phase of the plan also includes the deployment of thousands of soldiers to oversee the stabilization of the territory and the disarmament of Hamas. According to the proposal, those members who surrender their weapons could receive amnesty or safe passage out of Gaza.
The meeting is to focus exclusively on the situation in the enclave, although Trump's project has already raised questions about possible competition with the UN.
