Transgender women are women, says European Parliament

The European Parliament in Strasbourg has approved a recommendation to the EU Council that legal protection of gender identity and recognition of trans women as women should be a priority in the Union's external policy, reports European Conservative.

The text, based on a report by MEP Lina Gálvez (S&D), was supported mainly by left-wing factions, but also by the majority of the European People's Party (EPP). At the same time, Parliament rejected an amendment stating that "only biological women can become pregnant."

The document is not legally binding, but it may influence the Union's diplomatic positions and future legislative initiatives. It proposes that the Union actively promote the recognition of gender identity in international forums and in relations with third countries.

The decision has drawn criticism from conservative groups, who speak of an ideological shift and a lack of consensus among member states. The final position will be discussed by the EU Council in the coming months.
