Estonia allows NATO nuclear weapons on its border with Russia
Estonia has indicated that it would not block the possible deployment of NATO nuclear weapons on its territory, writes ERR.
Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that the country has no doctrine that would rule out such a move, provided it is in line with the Alliance's defense plans. According to him, the decision would depend on NATO's assessment, not on a unilateral move by Tallinn.
Estonia, which borders Russia, thus joins countries such as Poland and Sweden, which have recently been openly discussing strengthening nuclear deterrence in Europe. The debate comes at a time of continuing tension between NATO and Moscow.
Currently, France and the United Kingdom have nuclear weapons directly on their territory, while several other countries are involved in a nuclear sharing program with the United States.
Russia, meanwhile, has deployed its weapons in Belarus, further complicating the security balance in the region.
