Australia on alert ahead of Ramadan due to death threats

Australian police have launched an investigation after the country's largest mosque received a threatening letter. The package delivered to the Lakemba Mosque in western Sydney contained a drawing of a pig and a threat to kill the "Muslim race." This is the third such incident before the start of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Police said the letter would undergo forensic analysis and that they would increase patrols around religious sites and community events. Just a few weeks ago, a similar letter depicting Muslims inside a burning mosque was delivered to the same mosque.

In January, a 70-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with another threatening letter addressed to mosque employees.

The Lebanese Muslim Association, which operates the mosque, has asked the government for funds to strengthen security. During Ramadan, approximately 5,000 people visit the mosque every night. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned the series of threats.

The Islamophobia Register Australia has documented a 740 percent increase in similar reports since the mass shooting at Bondi Beach on December 14 last year. At that time, two gunmen inspired by Islamic State killed 15 people who were attending a Jewish holiday celebration. The country subsequently tightened its gun laws.
