A deal is a deal, EU appeals to Trump regarding tariffs
On Sunday, the European Commission called on the United States to comply with the terms of the EU-US trade agreement concluded last year. This was in response to the US Supreme Court overturning the global tariffs imposed by Donald Trump and the president subsequently announcing new blanket import tariffs.
Following Friday's court ruling, Trump imposed temporary tariffs of 10 percent on all imports, which he raised to 15 percent a day later. The Commission, which negotiates trade policy on behalf of the 27 member states, is demanding "full clarity" from Washington on its next steps.
"The current situation does not contribute to fair, balanced and mutually beneficial transatlantic trade," the Commission said, adding that "a deal is a deal."
Last year's agreement set a 15 percent US tariff rate on most goods from the EU, with some products, such as aircraft and spare parts, having zero tariffs. At the same time, the EU abolished tariffs on several US products and refrained from retaliatory measures.
The EU stressed that European products must continue to benefit from the agreed terms without further tariff increases. Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič discussed the situation with US officials.
