Macron accepts resignation of Louvre chief after jewelry theft
French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Laurence des Cars, director of the Louvre in Paris. Her departure comes at a time when the world's largest museum is facing the aftermath of last year's theft of jewelry worth $102 million and repeated strikes by employees.
According to the Élysée Palace, Macron praised her move as a responsible decision at a time when the institution needs calm and new impetus.
The Louvre has still not recovered from the October robbery, in which four perpetrators stole valuable jewelry. The stolen items have not yet been found.
The situation is further complicated by strikes, which lead to regular closures of the museum. The departure of the director comes at a time when not only security but also the modernization and stability of one of Europe's most important cultural institutions are being addressed.
