Iran to be led by president and two senior officials

Following the death of its supreme spiritual leader, Iran will be temporarily led by a triumvirate comprising President Masoud Pezeshkian, Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei and a legal expert from the Guardian Council chosen by the Council for the Discernment of the Interests of the System.

The establishment of such a transitional body is set out in the constitution of the Islamic Republic, according to the Times of Israel website. It includes the acting president, the head of the judiciary and a member of the Guardian Council. The latter is appointed by the Expediency Council, which advises the Supreme Leader and resolves disputes with parliament.

Under Iranian law, the Assembly of Experts must elect a new Supreme Leader ‘as soon as possible’.
