Berlin to take part in French nuclear exercises
France and Germany are deepening cooperation in the field of deterrence. President Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Friedrich Merz have announced the creation of a joint high-level steering group on nuclear issues to coordinate the strategic direction of the two countries.
Concrete joint activities are to begin this year, including Germany’s participation in French nuclear exercises.
The agreement also provides for closer coordination on conventional forces and missile defence. Paris and Berlin emphasised that the initiative is not an alternative to NATO, but a complement to the alliance’s nuclear deterrent.
The cooperation is to remain fully in line with the international commitments of both countries.
