Israel killed three journalists in Lebanon, says one was targeted

An Israeli air strike in southern Lebanon has killed three journalists, prompting strong reactions from Lebanese officials and international organisations. The victims include reporter Ali Shaib, journalist Fatima Ftouni and cameraman Mohammed Ftouni. According to local media, their vehicle was hit by a missile.

The Israeli army claims that it was Shaib, whom it identified as a member of Hezbollah's intelligence unit, who was targeted. However, it has not commented on the other casualties and has not provided evidence. Hezbollah has rejected these claims as unfounded.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack as a violation of international law and stressed that journalists should be protected during conflicts. At the same time, Reporters Without Borders warned that media security in the region was deteriorating. The incident fits into the wider context of escalating violence that has killed several journalists in Lebanon and neighbouring areas since late February.
