EU Asks Hungary to Explain Possible Leaks to Russia
On Thursday, the European Commission called on the Hungarian government to explain reports of possible leaks to Russia that it described as “extremely worrying”.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen plans to raise the issue at leaders’ level, a Commission spokesperson in Brussels said.
According to the Commission, the published information suggests a “worrying possibility” that a member state government could coordinate with Russia and thereby act against the security and interests of the European Union and its citizens.
“This is extremely worrying and it is up to the government concerned to explain this without delay,” the Commission said.
The concerns stem from leaked conversations that reportedly suggest the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto may have acted in ways that served Russian interests and undermined the European Union’s efforts to support Ukraine.
