US Military Partners with AI Firms to Boost Capabilities

The US Department of Defense has entered into agreements with seven leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies whose technologies will be deployed on the department's classified networks. The Pentagon described the move as a step toward modernizing military capabilities.

SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, Nvidia, Reflection, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services will be involved in the projects. Their tools are to be integrated into Impact Level 6 and 7 network environments to improve data processing, situational awareness and decision-making in complex operational environments.

The Defense Department said the agreements will accelerate the transformation toward an AI-based military and enhance the ability to maintain decision superiority across all areas of conflict management.

Not all companies, however, are working with the military without reservations. Anthropic became embroiled in a dispute with the Pentagon over the rules of engagement for its technology, which led to it being designated a supply chain risk and barred from deploying its tools.

According to media reports, Google has joined similar agreements allowing its models to be used for any lawful government purpose.
