Senators Challenge Meta Over Block on Lawsuit Ads
Two US senators have criticized Meta for removing advertisements placed by lawyers seeking clients for lawsuits over harm caused by social media platforms. Republican Marsha Blackburn and Democrat Amy Klobuchar wrote to Mark Zuckerberg arguing that the move was an effort to protect the company's business model at the expense of injured users.
The ads were intended to help lawyers reach people who claim that platforms such as Facebook and Instagram have contributed to mental health problems. Meta, along with other technology companies including Google, TikTok and Snapchat, is facing thousands of lawsuits over its impact on minors.
The senators also suggested that the decision may hinder access to justice. The case comes amid growing political pressure to regulate social media, an issue that is increasingly prominent in US election campaigns.
