The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is tightening its rules ahead of the next Oscar ceremony in March 2027. Performances and scripts must now demonstrably be the work of humans rather than artificial intelligence (AI).

While filmmakers may use AI tools in their work, a synthetic performer such as Tilly Norwood, introduced at last year's ceremony, would not be eligible for an Oscar. Screenplays, the Academy specified, must also be "human-authored".

The new rules come amid growing concern in the film industry that studios will use generative AI to replace human workers and cut costs. The actors' union SAG-AFTRA has also responded critically. The Academy added that it may request additional information to verify human involvement in nominated works.
