Japan and Vietnam Strengthen Energy and Minerals Ties
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi pledged during a visit to Vietnam to deepen cooperation between the two countries, particularly on energy and critical raw materials. In talks with Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, the two sides discussed developing their strategic partnership in areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors and space technology.
Energy security was also a key topic. Vietnam is seeking new sources of oil in response to supply disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
In that context, Japan pledged to help secure supplies for the Nghi Son refinery as part of a broader $10bn initiative.
The two countries also plan to strengthen cooperation on the mining and processing of precious metals to reduce dependence on China. Takaichi stressed that closer coordination in the Indo-Pacific region was crucial for stable supply chains and long-term economic growth.
