Pope Condemns Attacks on Media, Honors Killed Journalists
Pope Leo XIV on Sunday marked World Press Freedom Day by stressing the importance of independent journalism and condemning violations of media freedom worldwide.
In his address, he said the right to free information is often under threat, both openly and in more subtle forms.
He also called on the faithful to honor journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty, particularly in conflict zones. According to the Pope, they are individuals who bring the truth despite significant personal risk.
World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on 3 May, highlights pressure, censorship and violence faced by the media. The Pope reiterated that journalism is a pillar of society and that the dissemination of truthful information must not be criminalized.
