Zelensky Announces Ceasefire Despite Russia's Silence
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Ukraine will observe a ceasefire taking effect from midnight on 5 May, despite Russia's failure to respond to calls for a halt to the fighting.
Zelensky said the decision reflected Ukraine's priority of protecting human lives, which he described as more important than symbolic or political events.
He did not specify how long the ceasefire would last, but indicated that Ukraine would act "symmetrically" from the moment it takes effect, suggesting Kyiv would mirror any actions taken by Russian forces.
