Taiwan Tests Torpedo from Its First Domestic Submarine

Taiwan has conducted the first torpedo test firing from its first domestically produced submarine, marking a significant milestone in a program designed to strengthen deterrence against the Chinese navy and protect vital sea lanes in the event of war.

The test verified the operation of the combat system, including target detection, fire control, firing and guidance.

The indigenous submarine program is one of the central elements of Taiwan's armed forces modernization. It is being developed at a time when China is increasing military pressure and regularly conducts exercises around the island. The project also draws on technology and expertise from abroad, including from the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Narwhal submarine completed its first underwater trials in January. It is equipped with a combat system from Lockheed Martin and is designed to carry Mark 48 heavy torpedoes. The vessel costs approximately T$49.36bn ($1.57 billion). Delivery, originally scheduled for 2024, has been delayed.

Taiwan plans to deploy at least two indigenous submarines by 2027 and is considering equipping them with missiles in the future. The new vessels are to complement two older submarines purchased from the Netherlands in the 1980s. Despite these steps, Taiwan's armed forces remain significantly smaller than those of China.
