Russia Starting to Lose Ground in Ukraine, Says Economist

The war in Ukraine is entering a new phase, according to a fresh analysis by the Economist. A brief ceasefire in May did not produce a significant lull in fighting, with satellite data showing that the intensity of the conflict remained virtually unchanged. Both sides accused each other of repeatedly violating the agreement.

While Russian casualties continue to rise sharply, Moscow's advance is slowing. Estimates put Russian soldiers killed at between 280,000 and 518,000, with total casualties including wounded reaching up to 1.5 million. That represents around 3% of Russia's male population of fighting age before the war began.

Ukrainian forces have also regained some territory in recent months. Drones have played a significant role, complicating the movement of Russian troops deep behind the front line.

Analysts warn that Russia may be preparing a new summer offensive but acknowledge that the conflict may be approaching an important turning point.
