Pope Creates Vatican Commission on Artificial Intelligence
Pope Leo XIV has approved the creation of a new Vatican commission on artificial intelligence and its implications for society and the Church, Vatican News reported.
The decision was formalized in a rescript signed by Cardinal Michael Czerny, prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. The document cited the rapid development of AI, its potential impact on human beings and humanity as a whole, and the Church’s concern for the dignity of every person.
The new Inter-Dicasterial Commission on Artificial Intelligence brings together representatives of seven Vatican bodies, including the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Dicastery for Communication and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development will coordinate its work during the first year.
The commission will facilitate cooperation between the Vatican’s various offices, make recommendations on AI-related policies within the Holy See and promote dialogue on the ethical and social questions raised by the technology.
AI has become one of the defining themes of Leo’s pontificate. In recent months, the Pope has repeatedly drawn attention to the risks of technological progress, while stressing that new technologies must serve human beings and must not undermine their dignity or relationships.
