Ukraine to Study AI's Impact on Wartime Schooling

Ukraine is preparing its first national study on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on schooling during the war, funded through an OpenAI grant program, according to the technology news site Mezha.

The Ukrainian initiative was selected among the top 12 projects worldwide from hundreds of applicants. The research is being carried out by the WINWIN EdTech Centre of Excellence together with the Eastern Europe Foundation and the Ministry of Education.

The project aims to analyse how AI is changing teaching and communication between students and teachers, and to make recommendations for modernising educational policy.

It will include surveys of around 7,000 students aged 12 to 17, as well as their parents and teachers. Researchers will also examine how schools are using AI tools in hybrid education.

The project also seeks to develop tools for the safe use of AI, including practical guidelines. Results will be published through an open online dashboard and a national analytical report.

Oksana Matiyash, head of the WINWIN EdTech Centre, said Ukraine is undergoing a digital transformation under wartime conditions, and that the experience gained could help establish new global standards for safe digital environments for young people.
