Denmark's Frederiksen Gets Second Chance to Form Government

King Frederik X of Denmark on Saturday entrusted acting Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen with a new attempt to form a government, after negotiations between the right-wing bloc led by Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen collapsed.

The development gives Frederiksen another opportunity to secure a third consecutive term in office. Although her Social Democrats remained the strongest party in parliament, the March elections delivered their worst result since 1903, winning 38 out of 179 seats compared with 50 in 2022.

Government formation talks are complicated by the fragmented election results, which saw 12 parties enter parliament. Lars Løkke Rasmussen's centrist Moderate Party, which has previously walked out of coalition negotiations, may play a key role.
