Magyar Says Europe May Return to Cheap Russian Gas

Viktor Orban’s main challenger in Hungary, Peter Magyar, is increasingly showing that he may differ less from the prime minister on key geopolitical issues than many in Brussels had hoped, according to Weltwoche.

Some in the EU had expected Magyar to represent a firmly pro-European alternative to Orban. Yet during a visit to Poland, where he also held talks with former European Council president Donald Tusk, he said: “We defeated Orban, but that did not change the geography. Russia will stay where it is.”

Magyar warned that Europe was likely to return to buying cheaper Russian gas once the war in Ukraine is over. In his view, the issue will not be one of ideology, but of economic competitiveness and geographical reality.
