EU Holds Off on Naming Negotiator for Russia Talks

EU foreign ministers are meeting in Cyprus to discuss the worsening situations in Ukraine and the Middle East, Tagesschau reported.

A key topic is what role the European Union could play in a future diplomatic settlement of the war in Ukraine, given that contacts with Moscow have so far been led mainly by the United States under President Donald Trump.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said her office continues to push for increased pressure on Russia following recent attacks on Kyiv and ongoing threats directed at the EU.

Despite the discussions, however, the bloc currently has no plans to appoint a special envoy or chief negotiator for potential peace talks with Russia.

Several member states, including Germany, reportedly believe the EU should first agree on a common strategy and negotiating objectives before selecting a representative.

Behind the scenes, names such as Angela Merkel, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi have reportedly been discussed as possible candidates, although no formal decisions have been taken.

The Cyprus talks are also expected to address tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Iran and the situation around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas supplies.

Representatives from India and Saudi Arabia have also been invited to participate.
