Canadian Man Guilty of Sending 1,200 Lethal Packages
Kenneth Law, a 60-year-old former engineer and chef from Canada, pleaded guilty in an Ontario provincial court to 14 counts of aiding and abetting suicide after sending packages of poisonous substances to more than 100 people across dozens of countries.
In court, Law admitted involvement in the deaths of 14 people aged between 16 and 36 in Ontario, and acknowledged sending substances that prosecutors allege caused the deaths of 79 people in the UK. Investigators established that he had dispatched 1,209 packages to 41 countries before his website was shut down.
Law operated multiple websites through which he sold lethal chemicals, suicide aids and instructions on their use. To avoid suspicion, he also offered general merchandise, including hot sauce, presenting himself as a supplier of food ingredients.
Investigations in Britain found that 286 people received his packages, of whom 112 died. Families of victims have criticized the authorities for failing to shut down his operation sooner.
Law originally faced murder charges, which prosecutors dropped following a plea agreement. Under Canadian law, aiding suicide carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for September.
