Labour Wins Fourth Consecutive Election in Malta
Prime Minister Robert Abela's Labour Party has secured a historic fourth consecutive parliamentary election victory in Malta, though its overall margin has narrowed compared to 2022.
According to opposition leader Alex Borg, the gap in votes fell from around 39,000 to approximately 18,000. Borg conceded defeat but noted the reduction in Labour's winning margin.
Abela had called early elections a year ahead of schedule, citing uncertainty in the international environment. His campaign focused on economic confidence, with Malta recording growth of 4% last year and near-zero unemployment.
The country nonetheless faces concerns over the conflict in the Middle East, which could drive inflation and fuel price increases. As an import- and tourism-dependent island state, Malta is particularly exposed to such pressures.
Voter turnout stood at 87.4%, reflecting the high level of public engagement with politics. Celebrations and traditional car parades broke out in the streets following the announcement of results. Abela, who has led the party since 2020, is due to take the oath of office on Monday, with his new term focused on stability and economic growth in the European Union's smallest member state.
