Zelensky Pushes for Peace Progress Before Winter

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he wants to advance peace talks with Russia before winter, telling CBS that Ukraine must make use of its current strategic position while it holds the advantage.

According to Zelensky, Russia has been gradually losing the initiative on the battlefield since December 2025 and its army is exhausted, citing assessments from Ukrainian commanders. He argued that a diplomatic solution depends on intensifying pressure on Vladimir Putin, not only through continued fighting but above all through tighter sanctions.

US-brokered peace efforts are currently stalled, with Washington's attention focused on the conflict in Iran. Ukraine sees an opportunity in European support and bilateral negotiations.

Beyond diplomacy, Zelensky called for continued US assistance with air defense until Europe develops its own missile defense capability. He also said Ukraine is preparing a major agreement with the EU on drone technology and expressed hope for a similar partnership with the US, noting that Ukraine has accumulated years of experience in the operational use and neutralization of Russian drones.
