Frederiksen Secures Third Term as Danish Prime Minister

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has secured a third term in office after negotiating the formation of a new center-left minority government. The deal ends more than two months of talks and political uncertainty following Denmark’s March parliamentary elections.

Although the Social Democrats lost support and their parliamentary majority, they remained the country’s largest party. Frederiksen eventually won the backing of several center-left and centrist parties, allowing her to stay on as prime minister.

The new government will be made up of the Social Democrats, the Social Liberals, the Green Left and the Moderates. It is expected to rely mainly on support from the left-wing Red-Green Alliance to pass legislation and secure a parliamentary majority.

The cabinet is being formed at a time of several challenges. Among the most pressing are tensions with the United States over Greenland, the need to strengthen Denmark’s defense and the worsening security situation in Europe amid the war in Ukraine.

Frederiksen described the new coalition as a government for future generations and also emphasized animal welfare and social stability. The arrangement marks a clear shift to the left from her previous government, which included right-wing liberals.
