At Least Twenty Injured in Berlin Tram Crash

At least twenty people were injured in a tram accident in the Neu-Hohenschönhausen district of Berlin. The train crashed into a catenary pole while travelling on Wartenberger Straße and several cars subsequently derailed.

More than 50 firefighters were dispatched to the scene shortly after 9.30 a.m. According to the emergency services, three people suffered serious injuries and 17 others sustained minor injuries. A total of twelve people were taken to hospital.

Henrik Falk, managing director of Berlin's transport company BVG, said the cause of the accident was not yet known. He said investigators are looking into whether a technical fault, human error or a medical complication could have been behind the incident. The accident left the tram badly damaged and police have closed traffic in the area.

The incident came just days after two trains collided in another part of Germany, injuring twelve people. According to the authorities, it was caused by the failure of a signalling device.
