French PM Calls for Swift Approval of Security Bill

French Prime Minister François Bayrou's government wants to speed up the adoption of the RIPOST security bill following the violence that erupted after Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League victory.

Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu said he would ask President Emmanuel Macron to convene an extraordinary session of parliament in early July to advance the legislation.

The bill, which has already been approved by the Senate, aims to address everyday public disorder. Its measures include tougher action against illegal rave parties, the misuse of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, and the use of pyrotechnics and drugs. The legislation would also expand certain police powers and surveillance tools.

The renewed push for the bill follows widespread unrest during celebrations of PSG's Champions League triumph. According to the French Interior Ministry, more than 200 people were injured and one person died during the events.

Lecornu also called for greater accountability for those responsible for the damage caused during the disturbances. He said ministers should present proposals to improve the recovery of compensation from perpetrators.

The violence has reignited debate in France over public order, policing powers and the balance between security measures and civil liberties.
