Khalilur Rahman Wins Vote to Head UN General Assembly

The United Nations General Assembly has elected Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman as its next president.

Rahman will succeed former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and is due to take office in September.

The election was closely contested. Rahman secured the support of 99 of the UN's 193 member states, defeating Cypriot diplomat Andreas Kakouris, who received 91 votes.

Although the presidency of the General Assembly is largely a ceremonial role, its holder can influence the agenda and day-to-day functioning of the UN's largest deliberative body.

Rahman takes office at a time when the United Nations faces growing pressure to reform its institutions amid ongoing conflicts, geopolitical tensions and financial challenges.

The incoming president has said he intends to focus fully on leading the General Assembly. His priorities include reforming UN peacekeeping operations, advancing support for women and girls and strengthening assistance for developing countries.
