White House Sets New Rules for AI in Military Operations

The White House has unveiled a new strategy to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in US intelligence and military operations. President Donald Trump has declared that AI will play an increasingly important role in national security, while also imposing new constraints on its use.

Under the memorandum, the technology must not be used for censorship, unauthorized surveillance or other illegal activities. The plan also includes modernizing rules for autonomous weapons systems and expanding involvement of multiple technology vendors to reduce reliance on a single provider.

The administration is additionally preparing to meet with AI sector leaders and wants to expand testing of advanced models from a cybersecurity perspective. The announcement follows tensions between the Pentagon and Anthropic, which has refused to amend restrictions preventing its technology from being used in autonomous weapons.
