FIFA Reverses Ban on Water Bottles at World Cup

Following a wave of criticism, FIFA has modified its rules for fans attending the 2026 World Cup. The organization will now allow entry to stadiums with one sealed, single-use water bottle of up to 560 ml.

The initial ban on all external containers raised concerns among experts who warned of possible health complications during matches played in high temperatures. Hard and reusable bottles remain banned on safety grounds, FIFA said.

Organizers are also preparing a range of measures to manage the heat, including cooling tents, fans, sprinklers and hydration stations. FIFA stressed that the safety of both players and fans is a priority.

The rule change is intended to alleviate concerns about dehydration while preventing visitors from being entirely dependent on purchasing water from stadium kiosks.
