Zelensky Condemns Russian Strike on Nuclear Fuel Depot

Russian forces deliberately attacked a spent nuclear fuel depot near Ukraine's Chernobyl power plant, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday, describing it as an "extremely vile" strike that did not cause a radiation surge.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the attack severely damaged a fuel reception building just meters from where "large amounts of nuclear material" are stored, and added that a team would visit the site soon "to inspect the impact".

Ukraine's state nuclear agency Energoatom said no spent fuel was present in the building at the time of the attack. A subsequent fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.

"An extremely critical infrastructure facility – and an extremely vile Russian strike", Zelensky wrote on X, adding that Russia had used the Shahed attack drone.
