Earthquakes Shake Greek Island of Evia near Athens

A series of earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 4.3 to 5.2 struck the Greek island of Evia, northeast of Athens, on Sunday, with no injuries reported, the civil protection ministry said.

The ministry said the tremors caused minor landslides along the road network and moderate damage to a few houses in the northern part of the island. The earthquakes were felt in the Greek capital, about 130 km away.

Scientists said seismic activity is common in the north of Evia, where scattered villages lie on several fault lines, and there is no cause for serious concern. Authorities are nonetheless monitoring the situation closely.

Greece is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in Europe, though most tremors have not caused casualties.
